A parallel inquiry examines €1.3 million in jewelry discovered in his office, with the judge still awaiting documentation promised months earlier. Zapatero has denied all wrongdoing, submitted broad asset disclosures, and challenged aspects of the evidence gathering, including bank reviews and Bolivia-related leads. Spanish procedure allows pre-trial detention only under strict flight-risk or evidence-tampering criteria; the judge has so far declined to impose passport restrictions or custody despite prosecutorial requests. The case stays in the instruction phase with no trial date set, consistent with extended timelines in complex corruption matters involving high-profile figures.
