Iran's presidential term, currently held by Masoud Pezeshkian following the 2024 snap election, runs through 2028 under constitutional rules requiring votes every four years or within 50 days of vacancy due to death, resignation, or incapacity. Recent developments center on Assembly of Experts deliberations after the February 2026 assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the March selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as successor, alongside ongoing regional tensions and internal policy debates, none of which have triggered a presidential transition. Government statements from September 2026 focus on combining the next parliamentary and presidential votes in May 2028 rather than advancing the presidential timeline. Trader consensus reflected in low yes probabilities for near-term markets aligns with the absence of announced snap elections or constitutional triggers before late 2026.
