This market will resolve to "Yes" if a writ calling for a parliamentary by-election in a UK parliamentary constituency is issued by the UK Clerk of the Crown in Chancery by the specified date, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". The issuance of a writ must be confirmed within the specified timeframe to qualify. Only a writ issued after market creation will count. The writ for the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, issued prior to market creation, will not qualify. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the government of the United Kingdom, including the UK Parliament and the relevant local government conducting the election; however a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.Recent UK parliamentary by-elections have been triggered primarily by MP resignations, with the former incumbent's party deciding the timing and moving the writ in the Commons. Keir Starmer's September 2026 resignation as MP for Holborn and St Pancras, following his departure as prime minister, led to the next scheduled contest on 8 October. Earlier in 2026, Nigel Farage resigned from Clacton amid financial scrutiny and arranged for Reform UK colleagues to move the writ, while Labour coordinated Josh Simons' exit from Makerfield to seat Andy Burnham. Vacancies arise from personal decisions, party strategy, health issues, or external pressures, after which the holding party typically initiates the process within weeks to months. No new vacancies have been confirmed as of late September 2026, so the subsequent by-election depends on any further resignations before the next general election.
