Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party secured a landslide victory in Ethiopia’s June 2026 parliamentary election, winning 438 of the contested seats and a clear majority in the House of Peoples’ Representatives despite incomplete voting in Tigray and parts of Amhara and Oromia due to security concerns. This outcome, driven by the party’s emphasis on projected economic growth exceeding 10 percent and improved food security, positions the incumbent for re-election by parliament in October under the country’s constitutional process. Fragmented opposition parties captured only limited seats, leaving no viable parliamentary path for alternatives such as Gedion Timothewos or Berhanu Nega. Persistent insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia, along with Tigray’s exclusion, highlight ongoing stability risks that could affect future transitions, though current legislative control leaves little room for near-term shifts absent major unforeseen developments.
