Strong El Niño conditions have suppressed Atlantic hurricane activity throughout the 2026 season, producing no hurricanes as of mid-September and record-low accumulated cyclone energy near 5 units per National Hurricane Center data. NOAA and other forecasts project a below-normal season overall, with high wind shear limiting intensification and steering patterns keeping systems away from the U.S. coast. Category 5 landfalls on the contiguous United States remain exceptionally rare historically, occurring just a handful of times since reliable records began. While the market-implied odds near 96% reflect this consensus, a late-season Gulf of Mexico storm undergoing rapid intensification before landfall could still shift outcomes if conditions briefly align.
