Recent CPI readings have climbed to 4.82% in August 2026 from 4.45% in July, with food inflation at 5.95% and wholesale prices at 9.92%, reflecting broad-based pressures from elevated vegetable prices, West Asia-driven crude oil above $100 per barrel, and adverse base effects. Professional forecasters and RBI projections center around 5.0% for FY 2026-27, supporting the dominant 90.5% market-implied odds for annual inflation at or above 4.50%. Persistent energy costs and potential El Niño impacts on the monsoon could sustain or lift readings toward 6% in coming quarters. Downside risks include a swift resolution to geopolitical tensions easing fuel prices or stronger rainfall curbing food costs, though these appear less probable near term.
