Recent flash drought intensification across the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley, driven by record warmth and prolonged precipitation deficits since late June, has expanded exceptional (D4) conditions, with Texas currently reporting 3.6% of its area in D4 per the U.S. Drought Monitor. The National Drought Mitigation Center’s weekly assessments, incorporating NOAA and USDA data on soil moisture, streamflow, and evaporative demand, show D4 covering roughly 1.7% nationally as of mid-September. The U.S. Drought Monitor map for the week of September 22 will integrate observations through the prior Tuesday and reflect any late-month rainfall shifts, while the Climate Prediction Center’s seasonal outlook anticipates potential persistence or worsening in the southern tier before El Niño-related relief later in the fall.
