Sam LaPorta enters the 2026 season as the Detroit Lions' primary tight end in a high-volume passing offense led by quarterback Jared Goff, with competition for targets from wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams plus running back Jahmyr Gibbs. His 2025 campaign ended after nine games and 489 receiving yards due to back surgery, but he returned fully cleared from that issue before suffering a hip injury in training camp that sidelined him for the entire preseason. LaPorta has resumed full practice participation without setbacks as of late August, positioning him to start Week 1, though his durability remains a key variable for a full 17-game workload. Entering the final year of his rookie contract, the 25-year-old has added incentive to maximize production in an offense expected to emphasize the passing game amid questions on the defensive side and offensive line.
