Saanich’s October 17 municipal election features a tight four-candidate mayoral race after incumbent Dean Murdock opted not to seek re-election. The leading contenders—current councillors Karen Harper and Zac de Vries, along with Rishi Sharma of the Save Our Saanich slate and Robin Morton Stanbridge—share overlapping priorities on housing affordability, infrastructure renewal, fiscal responsibility, and environmental stewardship, yet differ in emphasis and background. Harper draws on nine years of council service and senior public-sector management experience, while de Vries highlights his two terms on council, Capital Regional District roles including chair of the housing corporation, and focus on regional partnerships. Sharma’s campaign stresses transparency, controlled growth, and local protections. With the ballot finalized only days earlier and a non-binding amalgamation question also on the ballot, trader pricing reflects the absence of decisive polling or late developments that would separate the front-runners.
