Recent polling averages place National and Labour within a few points of each other in party vote, with both major parties near historic lows around 29-34 percent while minor parties such as the Greens, NZ First, ACT, and Opportunity gain ground. Under New Zealand’s MMP electoral system, these shifts directly influence seat allocations and the ranking between the two largest parties. National’s position as incumbent coalition leader and Labour’s recent policy announcements on supermarkets and corporate offences have not yet produced a sustained lead for either side. Trader pricing reflects this narrow contest and the potential for late campaign swings or minor-party threshold outcomes to determine which major party finishes second on election night.
