The 2026-27 Ligue 2 campaign features an unusually deep pool of contenders for the runner-up spot, with multiple clubs carrying recent Ligue 1 experience and comparable squad resources. Relegated sides Nantes and Metz bring greater budgets and managerial familiarity with promotion pushes, while Saint-Étienne, Reims, Montpellier, and Sochaux add historical pedigree and transfer activity that levels the field. After seven rounds, Saint-Étienne sits clear at the top, yet the chasing pack remains bunched, with results showing high volatility and no dominant second-place candidate emerging. This parity, combined with the two automatic promotion spots and playoff structure, sustains tight trader consensus around the runner-up outcome.
