This market will resolve to "Yes" if the U.S. national debt reaches the listed value this year at any point by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". The resolution source for this market will be the U.S. Treasury Department (https://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP_WS/debt/current). If treasurydirect.gov/NP_WS/debt/current becomes unavailable, another credible source will be used.Persistent federal deficits near $2 trillion in fiscal 2026, driven by mandatory spending on entitlements, rising net interest costs, and defense outlays, continue pushing gross national debt above $40 trillion as of August 2026 and debt held by the public near 100 percent of GDP. The debt limit was raised to $41.1 trillion in 2025, with contact now projected for spring or summer 2027 absent new legislation. Congressional appropriations for fiscal 2027, November 2026 midterm elections, and any reconciliation measures remain key variables that could alter revenue or outlay trajectories, though current baselines from the Congressional Budget Office show no near-term surplus or reversal in the upward trend.
