Strong El Niño conditions, expected to intensify through the peak months, have generated elevated vertical wind shear across the tropical Atlantic, sharply suppressing storm organization and intensification in 2026. Official outlooks from NOAA and Colorado State University project a below-normal season with only 0–2 major hurricanes basin-wide and very low U.S. landfall probabilities for Category 3+ systems. As of mid-September, the Atlantic has produced just six tropical storms and zero hurricanes—the latest first hurricane on record in the satellite era—with Accumulated Cyclone Energy at roughly 5% of the 1991–2020 average. These factors underpin the market’s 91% implied probability against a U.S. Category 4 landfall before 2027. A late-season rapid intensification and precise steering toward the U.S. coast remains possible but would require a significant departure from current model consensus and climatology.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if any storm makes landfall in the conterminous United States as a Category 4 hurricane, as reported in official National Hurricane Center advisories (https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2023/IDALIA.shtml?) between market creation and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”.
This market may resolve based on the initial advisory released by the NHC for whether any storm has made landfall in the conterminous United States at Category 4 strength, regardless of any later retraction or analysis that may contradict the initial qualifying announcement. However, subsequent corrections or updates will be considered if they indicate a qualifying incident.
