Maine’s 2nd congressional district remains a competitive open seat following Democratic Rep. Jared Golden’s decision not to seek reelection. Former Republican Gov. Paul LePage, unopposed in his primary, holds a modest edge in trader consensus over Democratic nominee Matthew Dunlap, who advanced via ranked-choice voting after the June primary. Recent polls show the candidates nearly tied, reflecting the district’s rural character, Republican strength in recent presidential voting, and LePage’s name recognition and fundraising lead. Dunlap’s progressive positions on issues such as healthcare and cost of living contrast with the seat’s moderate history, sustaining uncertainty ahead of the November general election. Key upcoming factors include debates, turnout in key counties, and any shifts in economic sentiment that could widen the gap.
