Tight U.S. cattle supplies, with the national herd at a 75-year low near 86.2 million head as of January 2026, remain the dominant driver of ground beef prices amid ongoing drought effects and elevated feed costs that have constrained herd rebuilding. June BLS data showed the average price at $6.825 per pound, with July records near $6.89 and May peaks above $7.06, reflecting limited 2026 production forecasts around 25.5 billion pounds. Recent developments including resumed Mexican cattle imports after the screwworm ban and proposed tariff-free import windows have eased some pressure, yet persistent supply tightness and steady consumer demand continue to support elevated levels. Key upcoming catalysts include USDA inventory reports and FOMC-influenced interest rate paths affecting producer financing costs, with market-implied odds reflecting trader consensus on whether thresholds like $7.000+ or $8.000+ will be breached in any 2026 month.

The St. Louis Fed bases its numbers for ground beef prices on the BLS's CPI release. This market will immediately resolve to "Yes" upon a qualifying update of the St. Louis Fed's chart. If no data for any month of 2026 is released by the scheduled date for the January 2027 CPI release, this market will resolve according to the data for 2026 already available at that time.
The resolution source for this market measures prices to the third decimal place. Thus, this is the level of precision that will be used when resolving the market.
