Recent flash drought expansion across the central and southern Plains and lower Midwest, driven by temperatures 10–15°F above normal and persistent dryness, has elevated exceptional (D4) conditions on the U.S. Drought Monitor. The map released September 10, reflecting conditions through September 8, shows D4 covering roughly 1.5% of the contiguous U.S., with isolated pockets including parts of Arkansas (first D4 there since 2012) amid broader D1–D3 intensification in states such as Texas, Colorado, Minnesota, and Arkansas. Some localized relief arrived via scattered heavy rain and Tropical Storm Edouard remnants. The next USDM update, scheduled for September 17 and valid through mid-September, will incorporate the latest precipitation and temperature data from NOAA and partner agencies; short-term forecasts indicate mostly dry conditions across much of the affected region, with limited showers possible farther north.
