**Recent hot, dry conditions across the southern Plains and lower Midwest have driven flash drought intensification, pushing isolated areas of Arkansas into exceptional (D4) drought on the latest U.S. Drought Monitor map.** The USDM, produced weekly by the National Drought Mitigation Center with NOAA, USDA, and NASA input, classifies D4 as the most severe category—historically rare dryness (roughly 0–2nd percentile) with widespread crop/pasture losses and water emergencies. Data valid through early September 2026 show D4 covering about 1.5% of the contiguous U.S., concentrated in Benton County, Arkansas—the first such designation there since 2012—with less than 2% of the state affected overall. Arkansas leads with 92% coverage at D1 or worse, while rapid deterioration has also hit parts of Colorado, Minnesota, and the Mississippi Valley amid above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation. The next USDM release (typically Thursday mornings, reflecting conditions through the prior Tuesday) will cover the week of September 15 and directly inform market resolution. Traders should monitor short-term forecast updates from the National Weather Service and any late-week precipitation that could alter soil moisture or streamflow metrics before the cutoff. Historical analogs and ongoing harvest-season dryness suggest limited scope for rapid D4 expansion or contraction without significant rainfall.

D4 area below 0.05% is treated as cartographic noise at state borders and resolves "No".
Alabama carries a market in May through November, so this market exists for the week valid September 15, 2026. Weeks outside that window have no Alabama market and make no claim about Alabama's drought.
Each USDM release covers the seven-day period ending Tuesday at 8:00 AM ET and is published the following Thursday.
Resolution is based on the first published US Drought Monitor release for the listed week. Subsequent revisions will not be considered; the first published release is final.
If the US Drought Monitor has not been published by 11:59 PM ET on the day following the scheduled publication date, this market will resolve to "No".
