**Escalating U.S.-Iran military tensions and a tightened naval blockade on oil exports have driven sharp free-market depreciation of the Iranian rial in recent weeks.** As of early September 2026, open-market quotes reached record levels near 2.33–2.355 million rials per dollar, up more than 15% from late August amid attacks on tankers and infrastructure near the Strait of Hormuz. Oil loadings inside the Gulf fell roughly 80% year-on-year in August, with effective exports near zero as floating stockpiles outside the blockade dwindle and revenues dry up. Official rates remain far lower (around 1.37 million rials), but traders focus on the free-market rate that reflects foreign-currency scarcity, inflation above 80%, and capital outflows. With roughly three weeks remaining until end-September and no clear signs of de-escalation or renewed export relief, the current trajectory supports the strong market consensus for rates at or above 2.2 million rials.
