Andy Burnham’s recent PMQs appearances as the new prime minister have centered on fiscal responsibility amid rising borrowing costs and opposition pressure from Kemi Badenoch over defence spending targets, tax policy, and the upcoming October budget. His September 2 and 9 sessions featured opening tributes to 9/11 victims alongside exchanges on the Chagos Islands deal, Israel sanctions fallout, and commitments to NATO goals of 3% GDP by 2030 with a later 3.5% target. Traders are watching how his “people-pleaser” style and Greater Manchester mayor record translate to weekly clashes, with the next session likely influenced by September party conferences, ongoing market volatility, and any fresh economic data or foreign policy announcements that could shift the narrative.
