**Diplomatic normalization between Damascus and Washington has accelerated since the fall of the Assad regime in late 2024, with the Trump administration lifting comprehensive U.S. sanctions in 2025 and removing Syria from the state sponsor of terrorism list in August 2026.** Recent high-level contacts, including a September 16 phone call between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Secretary of State Marco Rubio focused on sanctions implementation, economic cooperation, and regional security, plus a large U.S. business delegation visit to Damascus in mid-September, signal expanding ties. Syrian officials have stated they are providing facilitations for greater U.S. diplomatic presence while noting that full embassy reopening hinges on U.S. logistical and security standards. Other European missions, such as Denmark’s in early September, have resumed operations, providing precedent, though the U.S. embassy—closed since 2012—remains in a phased planning stage with no confirmed timeline for staff return. These developments frame trader assessments around the pace of bilateral progress versus practical barriers to reopening.

This market will resolve to "Yes" if the U.S. government announces the reopening of its embassy in Damascus or if such a reopening is otherwise confirmed by 11:59 PM ET on the specified date. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No".
An official announcement made within this market’s timeframe will qualify for a "Yes" resolution regardless of whether an actual embassy opening subsequently takes place within the timeframe.
Any opening of a U.S. embassy in Damascus will qualify regardless of its exact location.
Announcements that do not clearly commit to opening an embassy, such as general diplomatic statements, exploratory comments, or partial/conditional steps, will not count.
The resolution source will be official statements from the Governments of the U.S. and Syria; however, a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.
