The tight race for the 2027 Oscars Best Adapted Screenplay reflects strong early positioning for The Invite and The Black Ball, each carrying 27.5% implied probability amid a crowded field. The Invite, Olivia Wilde’s A24 ensemble comedy-drama adapted by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack from a Spanish source, earned critical acclaim after its Sundance premiere for sharp dialogue and relationship insights. The Black Ball (La Bola Negra), Los Javis’ Cannes Best Director winner and TIFF People’s Choice recipient, draws prestige from its Federico García Lorca-inspired queer epic spanning Spanish history, bolstered by a major Netflix campaign. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey sits just behind at 26.5%, while sci-fi and literary contenders like Project Hail Mary trail as traders weigh precursor momentum, guild signals, and late-year releases before nominations.
