The Bank of Korea’s decision to deliver consecutive 25-basis-point hikes in July and August, lifting the policy rate to 3.00%, combined with policymakers’ emphasis on evaluating lagged effects before further tightening, underpins the 78.5% market-implied probability of no change at the October 22 meeting. Persistent inflation above the 2% target, driven by solid GDP growth revised higher to around 3.3% and semiconductor-led exports, alongside accelerating Seoul housing prices and household debt, supports gradual policy normalization. The recent Federal Reserve hike that widened the Korea-U.S. rate gap to 1 percentage point has added pressure on the won, yet the BOK’s September monetary policy report and meeting minutes highlight data-dependent pacing, favoring a likely November move over an immediate October adjustment.
