Recent euro area inflation projections, revised upward due to energy price surges from the Middle East conflict, have driven trader expectations toward further ECB tightening by December 2026. The Governing Council’s September 2026 decision to raise the deposit facility rate by 25 basis points to 2.50 percent reflected resilient economic growth, stronger-than-expected domestic demand, and headline inflation averaging 3.0 percent for the year. Market-implied probabilities align with analyst forecasts for an additional 25-basis-point hike at the December meeting, as core pressures and second-round effects from higher oil and gas prices remain a concern. The ECB has signaled no pre-commitment to a specific path, leaving room for data on wage developments and energy pass-through to influence outcomes.
