Strong El Niño conditions are driving high vertical wind shear across the Atlantic, suppressing tropical cyclone formation and intensification this season. As of late September 2026, the basin has recorded zero hurricanes and an extremely low Accumulated Cyclone Energy of 5.7, far below the 1991–2020 average, with only six named storms and no systems approaching Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale. NOAA’s updated outlook assigns a 75% probability of below-normal activity overall, including just 0–2 major hurricanes for the full season. With peak months waning and limited time remaining before November 30, trader consensus reflects these conditions. An unexpected El Niño collapse or rapid late-season genesis could still allow a Category 4 landfall, though models currently show low odds.
