Democratic challenger Rebecca Bennett holds a substantial lead in the NJ-07 general election market, driven by polling that shows her ahead of incumbent Republican Thomas Kean Jr. by five points among likely voters in a mid-September survey. Kean’s prolonged absence from Congress earlier in the year due to medical treatment, during which he missed over 140 votes, has contributed to sharply negative voter ratings and questions about his engagement. Bennett, a Navy veteran who secured the Democratic nomination in June, has raised millions in small-dollar contributions and benefits from the district’s narrow partisan balance, where recent elections have produced tight margins. Analysts rate the seat as competitive or leaning Democratic, with voter priorities including affordability, healthcare, and immigration shaping the contest ahead of the November vote.
