The open mayoral seat in Göttingen, with no incumbent seeking re-election, has produced a four-candidate field ahead of the September 13 first-round vote. Onyeka Oshionwu (Greens, backed by Volt), Florian Dinger (SPD), Ehsan Kangarani (CDU, supported by the FDP), and Thomas Goes (Left) compete on overlapping priorities including housing affordability, city finances, climate measures, and public participation. Official ballot approval in July and recent candidate forums have kept visibility high without decisive shifts in positioning. The fragmented vote and possibility of a September 27 runoff maintain tight implied probabilities, as turnout among younger and progressive voters in the university city could determine whether any contender secures an outright majority or forces further rounds.
