Escalating U.S.-Iran conflict and related supply disruptions in the Middle East have driven recent crude rallies, with Brent briefly topping $100 per barrel on September 9, 2026—its highest close since May—and WTI settling near $96. These levels remain well below the 2008 all-time highs near $147, reflecting persistent uncertainty over Strait of Hormuz flows, tanker attacks, and Houthi strikes on Saudi facilities that have reduced regional output. Weak Chinese demand and high inventories have capped further gains despite falling global stockpiles, while EIA forecasts now project higher averages for 2026 amid ongoing deficits. Key near-term catalysts include U.S. midterm elections, potential diplomatic shifts, and weekly inventory data that could influence trader positioning on whether prices breach prior records.
