Traders see the tight race between 2–3 inches and 3–4 inches of total September precipitation in New York City as reflecting a dry start to the month offset by moderate late-month rainfall potential. Through September 9, Central Park had recorded only 0.89 inches, well below the 4.3-inch 1991–2020 climatological average. Short-term forecasts show a frontal system bringing 60 percent chances of showers Saturday night into Sunday, with model consensus indicating 0.5–1 inch possible over that period, followed by generally drier northwest flow. With roughly 20 days remaining, the spread of outcomes hinges on whether additional coastal lows or tropical moisture intrusions develop, scenarios that current guidance treats as low-probability but capable of pushing totals above 5 inches. Market-implied odds near 50 percent for the two leading bins therefore capture genuine uncertainty in extended-range precipitation forecasts.
