SpaceX's September 2026 investor update targeting first orbital compute satellite launches in 2027 has emerged as the key catalyst shaping trader views on near-term AI data centers in space. The company detailed simpler AI1 satellite designs unveiled in June, leveraging Starlink tech for solar-powered GPU racks, while filing FCC plans for up to one million satellites aimed at gigawatts of capacity starting 2028. Starcloud's November 2025 H100 launch and subsequent in-orbit LLM training, alongside Google's Project Suncatcher prototypes slated for early 2027 and Blue Origin's April 2026 FCC filing for a 51,600-satellite constellation, underscore accelerating competition. These milestones contrast with terrestrial power constraints, though traders note risks around Starship cadence, radiation hardening, and optical links for distributed inference workloads.
