Omarion Hampton, the Los Angeles Chargers’ lead running back, enters the 2026 regular season as the clear bellcow option in Mike McDaniel’s offense following a rookie year limited to nine games and 545 rushing yards by ankle injuries. Through one week, he posted 12 carries for 43 yards and a touchdown against Arizona but lost a fumble in a lopsided loss, with the offense stalling after early success. Preseason reports and analyst consensus highlight his projected heavy workload—around 240 carries plus receiving work—bolstered by a healthy offensive line featuring Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt, plus McDaniel’s run-friendly scheme. Key variables include Hampton’s ankle durability, fumble concerns, usage in neutral or negative game scripts, and backup depth from Keaton Mitchell.
