Formal diplomatic protocols and historical precedent strongly favor handshakes over embraces during high-level U.S.-China summits. Ahead of Xi Jinping’s September 24 state visit to Washington, traders assign “No” a 94.3% implied probability, consistent with prior Trump-Xi encounters in Beijing and Seoul that featured only handshakes, arm taps, and ceremonial greetings. Chinese diplomatic norms prioritize restraint, and recent reporting highlights Trump’s emphasis on personal rapport through a White House state dinner and rare personal greeting at Andrews Air Force Base without any indication of altered etiquette. Persistent tensions over Taiwan and trade further anchor expectations to standard procedures rather than informal gestures.

This market will resolve to “Yes” if Donald Trump and Xi Jinping hug at any point during this summit. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No."
Video or photographic evidence of the hug must be released during the calendar days (ET) of the summit to qualify.
A qualifying hug is defined as an in-person greeting or gesture involving the two individuals wrapping at least one arm around the other individual's shoulders or back while facing each other in a manner consistent with a hug.
Gestures where only one individual places an arm around the other, or where both individuals place arms around each other while standing side by side and not facing each other, will not qualify as a hug. Brief incidental contact, such as a pat on the back or shoulder without arm-wrapping from both parties, will similarly not qualify.
For the purposes of this market, the summit begins when Xi Jinping enters the terrestrial or maritime territory of the United States and ends once Xi Jinping physically departs from United States territory.
This market may resolve at the end of the calendar day (ET) that Xi Jinping physically departs from United States territory at the end of the summit. If Xi Jinping does not physically enter the terrestrial or maritime territory of the United States by October 7, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “No”.
The resolution source will be based on photographic/video footage.
