Sam LaPorta enters the 2026 season fully recovered from 2025 back surgery that limited him to nine games and three receiving touchdowns, with a recent training-camp hip injury no longer a concern after he resumed full practice by late August and participated in pre-Week 1 drills. The Detroit Lions' new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, who elevated tight-end usage with Trey McBride in Arizona, should increase LaPorta's target share in an offense featuring Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Jameson Williams. Historical red-zone efficiency (17 of 20 career touchdowns inside the 20) and motivation in the final year of his rookie contract support elevated touchdown potential, though the crowded passing attack and any in-season injury risk remain variables for his season-long total.
