Key first-round developments included the Buffalo Sabres ending their long drought by defeating the Boston Bruins, the Montreal Canadiens upsetting the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games, the Philadelphia Flyers eliminating the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the top-seeded Hurricanes sweeping the Ottawa Senators. These results aligned with regular-season standings where Carolina led the East with 113 points, Buffalo topped the Atlantic at 109, and underdogs like the Flyers and Sabres exceeded expectations amid roster health and goaltending consistency.
