The tight clustering around Feyenoord, Ajax, AZ, and Twente for third place reflects a competitive second tier behind an expected PSV title challenge. Preseason models projected PSV as clear favorites to repeat as champions, with the next group separated by modest squad strength gaps and similar projected points totals. Early 2026-27 results have seen AZ top the table through five matches while Feyenoord sits third, underscoring how quickly form and fixture congestion can shuffle positions. Ajax’s heavy summer investment in experienced additions aims to close the gap after prior inconsistency, while Twente’s balanced roster supports consistent top-five contention. Long-season factors such as European commitments, injury management, and head-to-head results among these sides sustain the uncertainty over exactly who finishes third.
