The federal criminal case against the Southern Poverty Law Center in the Middle District of Alabama, charging the organization with wire fraud, false statements to a bank, and conspiracy to commit money laundering over payments to informants embedded in extremist groups between 2014 and 2023, remains pending with trial scheduled for October 2026. A judge denied the SPLC’s motion to dismiss on vindictive-prosecution grounds in August, finding insufficient evidence of constitutional impropriety, though the defense continues to contest the charges as lacking proof of donor deception or knowing concealment. Traders assign a 95% implied probability to acquittal, reflecting the presumption of innocence, the organization’s resources for defense, the narrow elements required for conviction on these counts, and the absence of any resolved factual findings against the SPLC to date. Upcoming pretrial motions and the trial itself could still shift positioning.
