**BIS warnings on hyperscaler AI capital expenditures exceeding $1 trillion through 2026 have emerged as the key driver of trader caution around an industry downturn.** The Bank for International Settlements has repeatedly highlighted risks of disappointing returns, debt reliance, and circular financing among firms like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta, drawing parallels to prior tech manias while noting supply constraints such as power and chips. Recent stock volatility, including sharp drops for Nvidia, Broadcom, and Korean memory makers in June and July, reflected these concerns, yet major players continue raising capex guidance amid rapid usage growth—such as Google processing trillions of tokens monthly. Chinese models matching top U.S. large language model performance at far lower prices add competitive pressure on pricing and margins. Upcoming earnings reports and potential new model releases or regulatory moves on exports could shift sentiment, as the market weighs sustained adoption against valuation resets without meeting strict downturn thresholds like 50% stock declines or major bankruptcies.
