Recent August CPI data at 4.82%, the third consecutive print above the RBI’s 4% target, combined with the central bank’s 5% average inflation projection for FY27, underpin the 90.5% market-implied odds on a 4.50%+ annual outcome for 2026. Persistent food price pressures, including onion and broader vegetable inflation near 6%, alongside surging global energy costs from West Asia tensions, have broadened price pressures and prompted economist calls for 25-basis-point repo hikes in October and December. These factors reinforce trader consensus that the annual average will settle above 4.5%. A swift de-escalation in crude markets or unexpectedly favorable supply conditions could still pull the print lower.
