Escalating US-Iran hostilities and attacks on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have driven the primary catalyst behind recent crude oil strength, with Brent settling above $101 per barrel on September 9 for its highest close since May and WTI advancing 3.25% to $96.05. Supply disruptions have widened global inventory draws, prompting the EIA to raise its 2026 Brent forecast to around $91 per barrel while physical benchmarks reflect tighter conditions. Current WTI levels remain well below the 2008 all-time high of $147.27, limiting near-term odds of a new record absent further sustained geopolitical shocks or demand surprises. Traders are monitoring ongoing Middle East developments, refinery runs, and upcoming inventory data for signals on whether prices can sustain momentum toward historical peaks.
